"Waste to Best" at Rostock's Eleven 2026

In many regions of Europe and around the world, the consequences of environmental pollution are noticeable. Especially, air pollution is causing health problems. In order to improve the quality of the air, urban areas need more green spaces. Ideally, the green spaces ought to be affordable, flexible, and installable on both transportation infrastructure and buildings. It is important to develop innovations that help conserve resources and contribute to fighting global warming and climate change.

The project combines innovative coating technologies with the recycling of hazardous waste from old dry batteries or thermal power plants. The goal is to use waste materials in a meaningful way as well as reducing emissions. This innovative coating process enables the greening of structures — such as building components, wind turbines, or guardrails. With drought-tolerant plants, more green spaces can be created which contribute to improving the microclimate and reducing emissions.

The science communication competition Rostock's Eleven, coordinated by the Rostock Thinks 365° association, took place this year on June 11th in Kühlungsborn. Twelve researchers presented their current research topics to a jury of media professionals, teachers, science communicators, and students from across Germany. The jury then selected the best presentation and the winner will receive a prize of €365.
